Can the Groom Have His Cake and Eat it Too?
Did you know that the tradition of the groom’s cake started in the south? The story goes like this: You didn’t serve the groom’s cake at the wedding reception. Instead, the groom’s cake served as the reception favors! It was sliced up and put into individual packages, and given to the wedding guests as they left the reception. The rumor is all the single ladies at the wedding slept with the cake under their pillows – hoping it would give them dreams of their future husbands.
Creative Groom and I are both southerners, but this is one tradition we decided to do without. Although it’s a fun tradition, it didn’t have any special meaning to either of us. The only meaning it had was that it meant we had to spend more money!
We went without it – but if your groom has his heart set on his own cake, be creative about it! Use the groom’s cake as the dessert at the rehearsal dinner. Or have a post-reception open house (some like to call this the “after party”) and serve it there! You could even go back to the original tradition behind the groom’s cake and use it as your favors – talk about a creative budget-saavy option!
I especially love the way this couple ditched the traditional wedding and groom’s cake and instead had a bride’s cake and a groom’s cake.

The alternatives are endless – whatever you do, have fun with it!
